McLean

McLean (m-KLAYN) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. The population of the community was 50,773 at the 2020 census. McLean is home to many diplomats, military, members of Congress, and high-ranking government officials partially due to its proximity to Washington, D.C. It is often distinguished by its luxury homes and its nearby high-profit shopping destinations. The two McLean ZIP Codes are among the most expensive ZIP Codes in Virginia and the United States. In 2018, data from the American Community Survey revealed that McLean was the third wealthiest city in the U.S., based on its poverty rate of 2.6% and its median household income of $190,258. The community received its name from John Roll McLean, the former publisher and owner of The Washington Post. It was founded in 1910, when the communities of Lewinsville and Langley merged. The CDP is located at 38°5603N 77°1039W (38.9342776, 77.1774801) at an elevation of 285 feet (87 m) The community lies in the Piedmont upland on the west bank of the Potomac River. The river forms the community's northern and eastern borders, and a number of its smaller tributaries flow north and northeast through the CDP. From west to east, these include Bull Neck Run, Scott Run, Dead Run, Turkey Run, and Pimmit Run. As of the 2010 census, there were 48,115 people, 17,063 households, and 13,453 families residing in McLean.

History

John Roll McLean bought the charter for the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad in 1902. McLean named a railroad station costing $1,500, of which $500 was raised locally, after himself where the rail line crossed the old Chain Bridge Road. The community itself was founded in 1910, when the communities of Lewinsville and Langley merged. It was named after McLean, the former publisher and owner of The Washington Post. It is located on the former route of Old Dominion Drive, which is now Old Dominion Parkway. The town has a population of about 2,000, with most of its residents living in the town of Langley, which was founded as a result of the merger of the two communities in 1910. It has a ZIP code of 44101. It also has a U.S. Post Office, which opened in 1903. It's located on Old Dominion Road, which runs through the town. The city's name comes from McLean's son-in-law, Stephen Benton Elkins, who was the owner of the Washington Post at the time of the town's founding. The post office was named for Elkins and his wife, Jean-Pierre Guenard, a French aristocrat who was also a member of the community's board of directors. It closed in the 1950s and 1960s, when it moved to a new location on the other side of the railroad line. It now sits on the present route of the Old Dominion Highway, which goes through Langley.

Geography

McLean is located at 38°5603N 77°1039W (38.9342776, 77.1774801) at an elevation of 285 feet (87 m) The community lies in the Piedmont upland on the west bank of the Potomac River. As an inner suburb of Washington, D.C., McLean is a part of both the Washington Metropolitan Area and the larger Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The CDP includes the unincorporated communities of Langley, Lewinsville, and West McLean, and it borders several other Washington suburbs including: Potamac and Cabin John, Maryland to the north; Brookmont, Maryland, to the northeast; Arlington to the southeast; Falls Church to the south; Idylwood, Pimmit Hills, and Tysons to the southwest; Wolf Trap to the west; and Great Falls to the northwest. McLean has a humid climate (Cfa) and is in hardiness zone 7a. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 24.88 square miles (64.4 km²) of which 24.79 square miles of that is land and 0.09square miles (0.23km²) is water. The community is located on the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) in Northern Virginia, 8 miles (13 km) northwest of downtown Washington, and 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Fairfax, the county seat.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 48,115 people, 17,063 households, and 13,453 families residing in the CDP. There were 17,756 housing units at an average density of 716.3 per square mile (276.6/km²) The racial makeup of the community was 79.3% White, 14.9% Asian, 1.8% African American, 0.1% Native American, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanics and Latinos of any race were 4.9%. The median income for a household was $164,888, and $194,832 for a family. The per capita income was $87,073. About 2.6% of the population was below the poverty line, including 2. 6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.2% ofThose 65 and older. The median age was 45.1 years, with 26.9 per cent of the residents under age 18. The gender makeup was 48.2 per cent male and 51.8 per cent female. The average household size was 2.80, and the average family size was 3.17. The CDP is located in the census-designated place (CDP) portion of the town of Laredo, Texas, which is in the U.S. Census tract known as the D.C. Rural Census Area (DCR) is also in the D CR section of the DCR.

Economy

As of 2012, 61.6% of the population over the age of 16 was in the labor force. The three industries employing the largest percentages of the working civilian labor force were: professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services. The cost of living in McLean is very high; compared to a U.S. average of 100, the cost-of-living index for the community is 142.6. Many businesses in neighboring Tysons, particularly those east of Leesburg Pike (VA Route 7), have a McLean mailing address because the US Postal Service boundary for West McLean (ZIP Code 22102) generally follows Leesberg Pike. The median home value in the community was $908,000, the median selected monthly owner cost was $3,803 for housing units with a mortgage and $1,000+ for those without, and the median gross rent was $2,000+. The median household income was $60,000. The average household income in Mc Lean was $62,000 in 2012. The unemployment rate was 2.9%. The average income for a family of four was $50,000; the average household incomes for a couple of families was $55,000 and $58,000 respectively. McLean has a population of 6,000 people. The area's population as of 2010 was 6.8 million; the number of people living in poverty was 2,716.

Government and infrastructure

The headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency is located in the Langley area of McLean. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center is also located down the street from the CIA headquarters. McLean is also home to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The McLean area is home to a number of government agencies, including the CIA, FBI, and Department of Justice. It is also the home of the National Security Agency, which is based in Langley, Virginia. The city's population is estimated to be more than 1.5 million, with the majority of residents living in the McLean, Virginia, area. It has a population of about 1.6 million people, with most of the population living in McLean and the surrounding areas. The town has a reputation for being a hotbed of crime and terrorism, and has been the site of several high-profile assassinations in recent years. The German School Washington, D.C. was previously in Mc Lean. The Washington Japanese Language School (WJLS, Washington Nihongo Gakk), a supplementary weekend Japanese school, previously held classes at St. Luke Catholic School. ABRACE Inc., a Brazilian Portuguese heritage language program, holds weekly classes at McLean High School for children ages 3 to 18. McLean is located in Fairfax County, Virginia, and is part of the McLean CDP, which includes Fairfax County and Falls Church, Virginia. It is located on the Potomac River, near the border with Maryland and the District of Columbia. It has a population of about 3,000 people, about one-third of whom live in the CDP. The population of McLean, Virginia is about 2,500 people, or one-sixth of the city's population. The McLean area is one of the fastest-growing areas in the United States, with a population growth rate of 0.7% in the last five years. Transportation

The Capital Beltway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Interstate 66, Dulles Access Road, Dolley Madison Boulevard/Chain Bridge Road, Georgetown Pike, and Old Dominion Drive all run through McLean. The Washington Metro's Silver Line is southwest of downtown McLean and is in the McLean CDP. Other Metro stations nearby include West Falls Church in the Orange line, and East Falls Church, on both the Silver and Orange lines.WMATA (MetroBus) and Fairfax Connector each have several bus routes traveling through Mc Lean. The McLean Metrorail station is on the Silver Line and lies along VA Route 123. The Tysons Corner station on the silver line also has a McLean address and lies about two miles west of the downtown area of McLean, Virginia. The Silver Line's Orange line station is also in the CDP and lies on VA Route123. The Orange line stops at the intersection of the Silver line and the Orange Line's Blue line stations at the Tyson's Corner station, which is in McLean's downtown area. McLean is a suburb of Washington, D.C. and is home to the Washington Metropolitan Area Democratic Party (WMDP) headquarters. The WMDP also has its headquarters at the National Mall in Washington, DC, and its headquarters are at the Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Maryland. The Metropolitan Area Republican Party (MARGP) is based in Fairfax, Virginia, and has its HQ at the World Trade Center in Washington. The MARGP's headquarters is at the Pentagon.

Parks and recreation

The McLean Little League is also located in McLean. In 2005, the girls' All-Star softball team won the Little League Softball World Series Championship in Portland, Oregon. The Mount Daniel School Park, operated by The City of Falls Church, is physically within the McLean CDP. Clemyjontri Park opened in 2006. MLL's girls' all-star softball teams have been runner-up twice, in 2004 and in 2013. The girls' team has won the World Series three times in a row, from 2004 to 2013. In 2013, the MLL girls'All-Star Softball team was runner-ups in the world series for the first time in the history of Little League softball. The team won in Portland in 2005 and again in 2013, both in the U.S. city of Portland. The Little League World Series is held every other year in the United States. The World Series takes place in the same city, Portland, every year from July to September. It is the only Little League to hold a World Series in the Pacific Coast region of the country. The U.N. World Series starts in August and runs through September. The tournament is held in Portland every year until the end of the year. It's the only World Series to be held outside of the United Nations. It has been held in Washington, D.C. since 1966. The United Nations World Series begins in August. It runs until September and ends in September.

Notable residents

McLean is a suburb of Washington, D.C. It is home to the Washington Wizards, the Washington Capitals, and the Washington Redskins. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden live in McLean. Other famous residents have included Vint Cerf, Newt Gingrich, Gore Vidal, James Tiptree, Jr., Bradley Beal and Otto Porter. Businessman Steve Salis became a resident of McLean after he purchased Beal's mansion in August 2020. McLean is also home to George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, who is a professor of constitutional law at the university. The McLean area is one of the most densely populated suburbs in the U.S., making it a popular destination for sports stars, politicians, and diplomats. It has a population of around 2.5 million. The area is located in the eastern part of the District of Columbia, near the heart of Washington D.S. and the National Mall. The Washington Redskins play their home games in the McLean Civic Center, which is located on the eastern edge of the city. The Capitals play in the Capital One Arena, which has a capacity of more than 100,000 people. The Redskins also play host to the National Hockey League's Washington Mystics, who are based in the nearby McLean High School. The team is coached by Alexander Ovechkin, a former Washington Capitals player who is now the team's captain. The Wizards also have two players, Otto Porter and Brad Beal, who play for the team.
