Newark is the county seat of Licking County, Ohio, 40 miles (64 km) east of Columbus. The population was 49,934 at the 2020 census, which makes it the 15th largest city in Ohio. It is the site of much of the Newark Earthworks, a major ancient complex built by the Hopewell culture. The Great Circle portion and additional burial mounds are located in the neighboring city of Heath, Ohio. This complex has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and is operated as a state park by the Ohio History Connection. The Heisey Glass Company started in Newark in 1895. The factory operated there for 62 years, until the company's demise in 1957 due to changing tastes. In 1909, The Arcade was opened. Modeled after innovative European retail buildings, it became one of Newark's first retail emporiums. At 60,000 square feet (5,600 m2), the Arcade is one-third the size of an average modern Wal-Mart. History

Newark is the primary city name, but also Hanover are acceptable city names or spellings, Marne on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Newark. The Newark Earthworks cover several square miles and about 206 acres. The Observatory Mound, Observatory Circle, and the interconnected Octagon earthworks span nearly 3,000 feet (910 m) in length. The Octagon alone is large enough to contain four Roman Coliseums. The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt would fit precisely within Observatory Circle. The even larger 1,180-foot (360 m)-diameter Newark Great Circle, located in Heath, is the largest circular earthwork in the Americas. In 1909, The Arcade was opened. It is the state's second largest city, after Newark, New Jersey, with 1,814,000 residents. The population of Newark in 2010 was 2,715, with an area to population ratio of 1.9%. The city's total area is 21.88 square miles, of which 1.27 square miles (4.08 sq km) is land and 0.48 square kilometers (0.49 sq miles) is water. Newark is located in the New Jersey Bay Area, which is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. It also has the fourth highest population density.

Newark is the site of several major manufacturers. The main shopping center in the area is the Indian Mound Mall, located in nearby Heath. The mall is named for the internationally known, ancient complex called the Newark Earthworks, built 2,000 years ago by the Hopewell culture of central Ohio. It is a National Historic Landmark and major elements of the earthworks are located less than a mile away from the shopping mall named for them. Longaberger, a major basket-maker, had their new corporate headquarters in Newark designed as a gigantic "medium market basket," their most popular model. Several industrial parks have been developed and house such major companies as Kaiser Aluminum, Dow Chemical Company, General Electric, Covestro, Boeing, THK, Harry & David, Communicolor, Diebold, Anomatic, International Paper, and Tamarack Farms Dairy. State Farm Insurance has Regional Headquarters here. The Park National Bank Corporation is headquartered in downtown Newark. Newark is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy, which was founded in Newark in the early 20th century. The Newark Airport, which opened in 1929, is located in the heart of the city. The airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States, with more than 1,000 flights a day. The city has a population of 2.5 million people, the highest rate of growth in the state of Ohio since the 1970s. It has been home to a number of world-renowned universities, including Ohio State, Ohio University, and the University of Delaware.

Education

Newark City School District serves the city of Newark. Newark High School consists of nearly 2,000 students and competes at the OHSAA D1 level. Newark is also home to a number of private religious schools, including St. Francis de Sales School, Blessed Sacrament School and Newark Catholic High School. The Ohio State University at Newark, founded in 1957, schools over 2,800 students and is the most diverse campus in the Ohio State system. C-TEC (Career and Technology Education Centers of Licking County) offers high school and adult programs. Newark has a public library, a branch of the Licks County Library System. The city is home to the Newark School for the Deaf, which is a non-denominational, non-sectarian school that offers a variety of programs for deaf students. The Newark School For The Deaf offers classes for the deaf, as well as a deaf-blind program for the visually impaired. The Newark School For the deaf and blind offers a program for deaf children and adults to learn how to communicate with the deaf through the use of a computer and hearing aid. The school also has a program that teaches deaf children how to use the hearing aid to help them understand the world around them, and how to talk to others about their experiences in the deaf community. It also offers an after-school program to help deaf children learn about the world through the eyes of the deaf. It is also the only school for the blind in the city.

Licking County provided demand-response public transportation under the name Licking County Transit. GoBus' Columbus-Wooster route provides service to Newark. Go bus also provides service from Columbus to New York City. Gobus' Newark-Columbus route is called the Newark-Newark route. The Columbus-Newcastle route is known as the Columbus- Wooster route. It runs from Columbus, Ohio, to Wooster, Ohio and Newark, New Jersey. It also runs from Wooster to Newark, Ohio. It stops in Columbus and Wooster on the way to Newark and stops in Newark on the return route. Go Bus also provides a route from Columbus andWooster to New Haven, Connecticut. It ends at Newark and terminates at New Haven in New Haven. The Newark-Woonsocket route terminates in Woonsocket, Connecticut, and ends at Wounded Knee, Rhode Island. It terminates on the WoundedKeeper route, which runs from Newark to Woonsaukee, Rhode Islands. It provides a service from Woonsucker to Woundsucker and back again. It has a route to Newark that ends in Newark. It was formerly known as Licking City Transit, but has since been renamed GoBus. It is now known as GoBus, which provides service between Columbus and Woonsucki. It used to provide service between Newark and Columbus. It's now called Columbus-Woundsucker, which is a route that goes to Wausau, New Hampshire.

Parts of The Tales of Alvin Maker series of novels by Orson Scott Card refer to the earthworks. Parts of James Frey's highly successful book, A Million Little Pieces, are based in and around Newark. The Great Circle and Octagon Mounds in The Hobbit series of books are also set in the city. The city is also the setting for the TV series The Hobbit, which is based on the book of the same name, and the film version of The Great and Powerful, which was based on The Great Wall of China. It is the inspiration for the film The Hobbit: The Desolation of the Great Barrier Reef, starring Tom Hanks, who is also based in Newark. In the film, the city is referred to as "Newark" in the film's opening scene, and as "The Great Circle" by the end of the film. The name of the town is also used in the book The Great Pyramid of New York, where it is described as "the most beautiful city in the world" The city's name is used as a reference to the Great Hall of Nations, which dates back to the 13th century. It was also the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the 17th century and was known as the "Great Wall of New Jersey" It is also known as Newark in the 19th century, when it was called "The City of the Rising Sun" and the name was used to refer to one of the first cities in the United States.
