Conshohocken

Conshohocken (kon-sh-HOK-n; Lenape: Kanshihàkink) is a borough on the Schuylkill River in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in suburban Philadelphia. Historically a large mill town and industrial and manufacturing center, after the decline of industry in recent years it has developed into a center of riverfront commercial and residential development. In the regional slang, it is sometimes referred to by the colloquial nickname Conshy (KON-shee). The sister community of West Conshohocksen is located on the opposite side of the SchUylkill river. The borough is part of the Fourth Congressional District (represented by Rep. Madeleine Dean) and the 148th State House District (representing Rep. Mary Jo Daley). On September 1, 2021, the borough suffered severe damage and disruption from flooding caused by heavy rainfall associated with the remnants of Hurricane Ida. The mayor is Yaniv Aronson, and the borough council is made up of seven members, with the mayor being the only non-white member. The name comes from the Unami language and may be translated as pleasant valley. It is located at 40°438N 75°187W (40.077135, -75.302009) The borough has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km²) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10km²) (2,97%) is water. A rather sharp bend in the river at Consh ohocken gives the Schouylkill Expressway, which hugs the far bank.

Etymology

Conshohocken is the primary city name, but also Gulph Mills, W Cnshohocken are acceptable city names or spellings. The name "Conshohocken" comes from the Unami language and may be translated as pleasant valley. The name derives from either Kanshi'hak'ing, meaning "Elegant-ground-place", or, more likely, Chottschinschu'hak"ing, referring to the big bend in the Tulpe'hanna (Turtle River, or modern Schuylkill River). The name may also mean "pleasant valley" or "pleasure valley" in the local language. It is the name of a village in the town of Conshohockshire, in the province of Somerset, Pennsylvania. The village is located on the banks of the Schuyler River, a tributary of the Potomac River. The town's name means "pleasantly pleasant valley" and means "pleasant place" in Unami. It was named after the village's former owner, who lived in the area in the 1800s and early 1900s. It has a population of around 2,000. The city's name is also used for a village on the Rhine River, which runs through the town, and for a small section of the town in the neighbouring county of Somerset. Geography

The Schuylkill Expressway hugs the far bank, a curve that is well known to regional radio listeners as the Conshohocksen curve. Railroad tracks line both river banks, reflecting the valley's heavy industrial past as well as its continuing rail activity including Norfolk Southern and SEPTA. A rail trail portion of the SchUylkill River Trail also passes through. The borough is located in the Philadelphia suburbs and is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which runs from Philadelphia to New York City. It has a population of 1,816. It is one of the smallest boroughs in the state, with the largest population center being Philadelphia, which has more than 2,000. The city's population was 1,715 in 2010. In 1940, the Pennsylvania guide, compiled by the Writers' Program of the Works Progress Administration, briefly described the town in 1940. The guide said it was a flourishing industrial community with frame and brick houses along wide and often hilly streets. It also said it had a textile mill, boiler factory and textile mill. The city is in the 4th Congressional District and the 7th State Senate District, represented by Sen. Vincent Hughes. In 2010, the town suffered severe flooding from flooding from Hurricane IdA.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,589 people, 3,329 households, and 1,834 families residing in the borough. The racial makeup of the borough was 89.88% White, 7.77% African American, 0.08% Native American,0.84% Asian, 0,01% Pacific Islander, and 0.92% from two or more races. 3.5% of the population were of Hispanic or Latino ancestry. The median income for a household in the Borough was $43,599, and the median incomes for a family was $50,601. The per capita income for the borough is $22,128. About 4.2% of families and 5.8% of people were below the poverty line, including 6.9% of those under age 18 and 12.7% ofThose age 65 and over. The borough is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects to New Jersey and New Jersey via a series of tunnels. It is located near the junction of the Raritan River and the Susquehannock River, which connect to New York and New York City by the Delaware River. It has a population of about 7,000, with 3,518 people living in 3,517 housing units. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 3.02. In the borough the population was spread out, with 20.8%. under the age of 18, 8.8. from 18 to 24, 35.9%. from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. Transportation

Conshohocken is served by two SEPTA Regional Rail stations, both of which are along the Manayunk/Norristown Line. The main one is officially located at Washington and Harry Streets, and the other is at Spring Mill at the end of East North Lane, south of Hector Street. Two interstate highways pass just outside of the borough: I-76 (locally known as the Schuylkill Expressway) and I-476 (Locally referred to as "the Blue Route").
