Mound is a city in western Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,052 at the 2010 census. Mound was the birthplace of the Tonka truck that is named after Lake Minnetonka, which the eastern part of town sits on. The city derived its name from the Indian mounds once found within the present day city limits. The former municipality of Island Park, which contained of Phelps Island, merged with Mound in 1960. The Mound schools include Grandview Middle School, Hilltop Primary School, MoundWestonka High School, and Shirley Hills Elementary. The school mascot is the Whitehawk, which was changed from the Mohawk in 1997. Some students attend public schools in other school districts chosen by their families under Minnesota's open enrollment statute. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city has a total area of 4.96 square miles (12.85 km²), of which 2.86 sq miles (7.41 km²) is land and 2.10sq miles (5.44 km²") is water. Mounds is 22 miles (35 km) west of Minneapolis, the county seat, and has more than 1,000 docks on its various lakes. It is also connected to Spring Park, Orono, St. Bonifacius, and Minnetrista by County Roads 15 and 110, which are two of the main routes in the area. The City Council has been working for several years on a project named "Mound Visions" to improve business traffic in the city.

Geography

Mound is the primary city name, but also Minnetrista are acceptable city names or spellings, Orono, Shorewood on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Mound. Lakes in Mound include Black Lake, Dutch Lake, Lake Langdon, Saunders Lake, and Seton Lake. Lake Minnetonka encompasses these and many others in the area. Mound has more than 1,000 docks on its various lakes. The lakes geographically define the town's areas, such as Three Points, The Island, The Highlands, Grandview Boulevard and Shirley Hills. The city has a total area of 4.96 square miles (12.85 km²) according to the U.S. Census Bureau, of which 2.86 sq miles (7.41km²) is land and 2.10sq miles (5.44 km²") is water. County Roads 15 and 110 are two of the main routes in the city. The town is located on the banks of Lake Minetonka, which is a tributary of the Red River. The Red River runs through the center of Mound, and the city is on its eastern edge. The Mound area is home to the Mound High School football team, which won the state championship in 2010. The school's football team also won the national championship in 2011. The football team is known as the "Mound Highlanders" and the team won the Minnesota State Championship in 2012. The team's winnings total was more than $1.2 million, the most for a single season since the start of the 2010-11 season. The City's population is 6,000, making it one of the smallest cities in Minnesota.

History

Mound derived its name from the Indian mounds once found within the present day city limits. The former municipality of Island Park, which contained of Phelps Island, merged with Mound in 1960. Mound celebrated its centennial in 2012. The city is located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is located on the shores of Lake Mound, a body of water that was once known as the Mound River. The lake was once home to the Phelps Island tribe of the Dakota Indians. The Mounds were not built by Dakota Indians, but were made by prehistoric Indians. They are located near the town of Mound and the city of St. Louis, in the state of South Dakota. The City of Mounds was founded in 1836. It was named after Mound City, Minnesota, a town in the Dakota Territory, which was once part of Dakota Territory. The town was founded by Mound County, Dakota Territory and the Dakota tribe of Dakota Indians in 1838. The name Mound means "mound" or "hill" in Dakota Dakota language. It means "mountain" in Dakota Dakota language and "mounds" in Mound Dakota language, which means " mound" in Native American language, or "mounded" in other languages, such as "Mound Dakota" and "Mounds Dakota" Mound was named for the mounds found in the area, which were built by the Dakota Dakota, not the Dakota Sioux.

The band's name is Mound Westonka, which means "westonka" in German and "west" in English. It is also known as the "Westons" because of its location in Westonka, a suburb of Mound. It also has an elementary school and a middle school. It has a high school, which also is called Mound Westonka and has a junior high, which goes by the name "Mound West" or "Wright" for short. The middle school is called Grandview, and it has a primary school, called Hilltop.

Local sites

The Mound City Council has been working for several years on a project named "Mound Visions" One of the project's goals is to improve business traffic in the city. Some of its recent accomplishments are the Mound Marketplace, the realignment of County Road 15, the Lost Lake Greenway, and the Villas on Lost Lake townhouses. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 9,052 people, 3,974 households, and 2,444 families living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 95.8% White, 0.9% African American,0.3% Native American, 1.4% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.96% of the population. The median income for a household in theCity was $60,671, and the median income. for a family was $68,396. The per capita income for the City was $30,309. About 1.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.1% for those 65 and over were living below the poverty line. The city is located in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers's National Defense Training Area. The U.N. State Department has a training center in the City of St. Louis, Missouri. The City of Saint Louis is home to the University of Missouri-St. Louis's College of Public Health. The University of South Dakota's School of Medicine has a program that teaches health care professionals how to care for the sick and elderly. The St.Louis County Health Department is the largest health care provider in the state, with more than 2,000 staff members. It is the only state-run health care agency in the county. The state has a population of more than 10,000.
