Northbrook

When incorporated in 1901, the village was known as Shermerville in honor of Frederick Schermer, who donated the land for its first train station. The village changed its name to Northbrook in 1923 as an effort to improve its public image. The name was chosen because the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River runs through the village. In 1997, President Bill Clinton visited Northbrook to congratulate the 8th-grade students of Northfield Township (which is mainly Northbrook) for getting the highest score on a world science test. Northbrook is located at 42°745N 87°5027W (42.129226, 87.840715). According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Northbrook has a total area of 13.31 square miles (34.47 km²) (or 99.51%) is land and 0.07 sq miles (0.18 km²), (or 0.49%) is water. Between 1950 and 1980, the town's population rose from 3,319 to 30,735. The last working farm in Northbrook, the Wayside Farm, was sold and closed in 1987. The Northbrook Court shopping mall, the Ed Rudolph Velodrome, the Chicago Curling Club, and the Northbrook Public Library are all located in the city of Northbrook. Glenbrook North High School was founded in 1952 as Glenbrook High School, and is now called Northbrook North Elementary School. It is also home to the North Brookfield Park District.

History

Members of the Potawatomi tribe were the earliest recorded residents of the Northbrook area. Joel Sterling Sherman moved from Connecticut with his family and bought 159 acres (64 ha) of land in the northwest quarter of Section 10 for $1.25 per acre. A German immigrant named Frederick Schermer donated a portion of the land he bought from Sherman to be used for the town's first railroad station, which was named after him. By the 1870s, Shermerville (which also took its name from Shermer) was a farming community. Northbrook was the first community not bordering Lake Michigan to filter Lake Michigan water for public use. Between 1950 and 1980, Northbrook's population rose from 3,319 to 30,735. Owing to the suburbanization of the community, the last working farm in Northbrook, the Wayside Farm, was sold and closed in 1987. At the time of incorporation, it had 311 residents and 60 houses. In 1923 "Northbrook", the winning name, was adopted, and Northbrook had 500 residents. Later on, after the end of World War II, North Brook's population began to rapidly increase. In the 1990s, the population of Northbrook rose from 500 residents to over 3,000. The town is now home to more than 30,000 people.

Geography

Northbrook is located at 42°745N 87°5027W (42.129226, 87.840715).According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Northbrook has a total area of 13.31 square miles (34.47 km²) of which 99.51% is land. Northbrook is generally considered to be a part of the Chicago North Shore. The town has a population of 2,816. It is located on the Chicago River, which flows through the town. The city is located in the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMA), which includes the towns of Cicero, Cicero East, and Cicero West. The CMA covers an area of 14.24 square miles, or 0.49 km², of which 0.07 sq miles (0.18km²) is water. The Northbrook CMA is one of the largest CMA communities in the U.S., with a total population of 3,822. It has a CMA community center, the Northbrook Civic Center, which opened in 1968. The community is home to the Chicago Cubs baseball team, which won the World Series in 1988. It also hosts the Chicago Bulls hockey team, the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Chicago Bears football team. The Chicago Blackhawks won the Super Bowl in 1988 and the NBA Championship in 1998. The Blackhawks also won the Winter Olympics in 1998 and the World Cup in 2008. The team won a gold medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census there were 35,222 people, 12,749 households, and 9,347 families residing in the village. The village's age distribution consisted of 20.8% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 17.5%) from 25 to 44, 30.5%" from 45 to 64, and 25.6% who were 65 years of age or older. Northbrook has eight synagogues, is home to a K-8 Jewish Day School, Sager Solomon Schecter Day School of Meperpolitin Chicago and a branch of JCC Chicago. The Islamic Cultural Center of Greater Chicago is located in Northbrook. The Hindu Hanuman Temple of Greater. Chicago is Located in neighboring Glenview, and there is a Bahá'í House of Worship in nearby. Wilmette. The population density was 2,647.28 inhabitants per square mile (1,022.12/km²). There were 14,209 housing units at an average density of 1,067.94 per sq. mile (412.33/ km²). The racial makeup of the village was 77.53% White, 0.76% African American,0.07% Native American, 16.35% Asian, 0,01% Pacific Islander, and 4.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.41% of the population. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 2.55.

Economy

Northbrook had 15,613 employed civilians as of the 2006-2008 census estimate, including 6,841 females. Of the civilian workers, 12,458 were private for profit wage and salary workers. The corporate headquarters of Underwriters Laboratories, Crate & Barrel, and Bell Flavors & Fragrances are located in Northbrook. The North American headquarters of Astellas, a Japanese pharmaceutical company, and Italian-based Barilla, the largest pasta company in the world, are also in the village. Allstate's headquarters are in a nearby area in Northfield Township. In 2021, the company announced it would sell the property. According to Northbrook's 2018 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top employers in theVillage are: Allstate, Bell, Underwriters, and Crate and Barrel. The village has a population of 14,816. The population of Northbrook has a growth rate of 1.2 percent. The city has a crime rate of 0.7 per cent, the lowest in the state. The town has a poverty rate of 2.2 per cent. The unemployment rate is 1.3 per cent and the poverty rate is 2.1 per cent in the town. The median household income is $30,000. The average household income in the city is $50,000, the highest in the county. The highest rate of poverty is 1 per cent; the lowest rate is 0.8 per cent for the city's suburbs. The top employers are: Bell, underwriters, Crate&Barrel, and Underwriters.

Arts and culture

Northbrook's largest event is Northbrook Days, a multi-day festival typically held every year towards the end of the summer. The Farmers' Market is held every Wednesday from June to October in the Meadow Shopping Plaza parking lot on the corner of Cherry Lane & Meadow Street in downtown Northbrook. There, vendors sell locally-made goods such as produce, cheese, pies, and condiments. The Northbrook Symphony is a nonprofit that plays orchestral music in the town. Just outside of Northbrook lie the Kohl Children's Museum in Glenview and the Botanic Garden in Glencoe. The town is home to the Northbrook Historical Society, which works to preserve Northbrook's heritage and educate people about it. It operates a museum located in the former Northfield Inn. It also has its own library, which is open to the public every day of the year. Northbrook is located on the banks of the Chicago River. It is about 40 miles north of Chicago and about 30 miles south of Chicago's downtown area. It has a population of about 3,000. It was founded in 1872. It's located on a former rail line. It lies on the Illinois Turnpike. It runs through the town's downtown. It goes through Glencoe, a suburb of Chicago, and through Glenview, a town of about 2,000 people. It sits on the edge of the Illinois River, which runs through Northbrook and into Chicago. The city is about 20 miles from Chicago and is about 30 minutes from Chicago.

Parks and recreation

The Arbor Day Foundation has designated Northbrook as a Tree City U.S.A. community since 1994. The Northbrook Park District, headquartered in Northbrook, operates recreational facilities in the town. The 17.25-square-mile (44.7 km²) park district, formed in June 1927, serves all of Northbrook and some unincorporated areas within Cook County. The park district lies within the townships of Northfield and Wheeling. The River Trail Nature Center houses educational exhibits and events about local biology and wildlife. It is located along the Des Plaines River Trail upon the Desplaines River, and is open to the public. Northbrook has many parks and golf courses, including Village Green Park, Techny Prairie Park and Fields, Wood Oaks Green Park and Stonegate Park, Crestwood Park, and Greenfield Park. The town also has the Northbrook Sports Center, Northbrook Leisure Center, and Meadowhill Aquatic Center. The village is home to the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox. The Chicago Cubs are the No. 1 team in terms of attendance, with more than 80,000 fans per game. Chicago Cubs fans make up the majority of the city's population. The team has a winning record in the last 10 years, with an average attendance of more than 70,000 per game (2011-2014). The Chicago Bulls have won the World Series three times in a row, most recently in 2010.

Law and government

The Village of Northbrook adopted a council-manager form of government after a 1953 referendum. The Northbrook Police Department provides law enforcement and the Northbrook Fire Department provides fire suppression and emergency medical services. Civil and criminal law cases are heard in the Cook County Circuit Court of the State of Illinois court system, or in the Northern District of Illinois in the federal system. In the state court, the public prosecutor is the Illinois state's attorney; in the Federal court it is the United States attorney. A murderer who acted in Northbrook is on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted Fugitives list. Northbrook was ranked by MoneyGeek, a financial planning website, as being the safest town in Illinois, largely due to its low ($116 per capita) expenditure on crime. The village lies within Illinois's 10th congressional district, which is currently represented by Brad Schneider, a Democrat from Deerfield. The southern and eastern parts of the village are part of Illinois's 9th congressional districts, which are represented by Jan Schakowsky and Julie Morrison. At the county level, the municipality lies within District 14 represented by Scott R. Britton (D-Glenview). In the 2008 presidential election, Barack Obama received over 60% of Northfield Township's vote. At state level, Northbrook lies within the 9th Senate District represented by Laura Fine and the 29th Senate districts represented by Julie Morrison and Adriane Johnson. The 58th House District is represented by Bob Morgan.

Education

Northbrook is served by multiple school districts. Wheeling Community Consolidated School District 21, headquartered in Wheeling, also serves sections of Northbrook. The Northbrook Public Library first opened on June 30, 1952, in space located in the village hall. The library's origins stem from a reading room created by the Citizens' Club of Shermerville. Oaklane School opened in 1957 and closed in 1977.Oakton Community College (in Skokie, Des Plaines and other locations) serves Northbrook and surrounding areas. Northwestern University is located in nearby Evanston, and Lake Forest College is Located in nearby Lake Forest. Northbrook is home to St. Norbert Catholic School, a K-8 Catholic Grade School, and the Cove School for disabled children, which is a K12 school for disabled kids. The community is also home to West Northfield School District 31, which serves the area around Glenview and Northbrook, as well as Northbrook/Glenview School District 28, which covers parts of Glenview. Northfield Township High School District 225 is the high school district serving Northbrook; Glenbrook North High School is the main rival of Glenbrook South High School. The western area within CCSD 21 is served as part of Township high School District 214 aspart of Wheeling High School, which also serves the western part of the community. The town has a public library that opened in 1952, and a private library that was dedicated in 1954. The public library is run by the Northbrook School District.
