Bellwood is a village in Proviso Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located 13 miles (21 km) west of Chicago's downtown Loop. The population was 18,789 at the 2020 census. The municipality took its name from one of the village's early subdivisions, "Bellewood". However, in later years, the final "e" was dropped. The black population of Bellwood jumped from 1.1 percent in 1970 to 35 percent in 1980 and 70 percent in 1990. Bellwood has a total area of 2.40 square miles (6.22 km²), all land. The current mayor is Andre F. Harvey, who is the first African-American mayor and Bellwood's first African American-American School District 88. The school district has an average enrollment of 88 students per year, making it the nation's second-largest school district. The district has a graduation rate of 80.9%. Bellwood is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which has an enrollment of 8,000 students. The village has a high school with an average graduating rate of 75%. The school's mascot is the Fighting Irishman, which means "Fighting Irishman" in Irish slang. The town's motto is "The Fighting Irish" meaning "the Fighting Irish are the people who stand up for what is right". The town has a strong tradition of community service, with many members of the community serving as firefighters, police officers, firefighters, and other emergency responders.
History
Bellwood was incorporated on May 21, 1900. The municipality took its name from one of the village's early subdivisions, "Bellewood" The Chicago, Aurora and Elgin Railway and the Chicago & North Western Railway provided rail passenger service. The black population of Bellwood jumped from 1.1 percent in 1970 to 35 percent in 1980 and 70 percent in 1990. The community saw some new development as a result of various minor industrial and commercial organizations. A few major firms exist in Bellwood today, but the collapse of many other large sectors has resulted in a decrease in employment and tax revenue. The village's population of 4,991 persons in 1930 is due to the annexation of territory west of Mannheim Road in 1926, as well as ongoing migration. The 1970s saw racial upheaval and inclusion in a Supreme Court case in the United States. Bellwood sued a local real estate company in 1975, alleging racial discrimination. Four years later, the Supreme Court issued a historic decision allowing governments to utilize testers and sue when discrimination occurs. In 1980, Bellwood saw the creation of the Bellwood Police Department. The Bellwood Fire Department was established in the early 1980s. It was the first fire department in the Chicago area. It has been the largest fire department since the Chicago Fire Department in the 1940s. The fire department has been in existence since the 1950s, when it was created. It is the oldest fire station in the city of Chicago. The city's fire department was founded in the 1880s.

Infrastructure
The village is serviced by a Metra railroad station with commuter service to Chicago. In November 2011, Union Pacific Railroad announced plans to renovate and upgrade Bellwood's Metra station and add a third rail line. The project, estimated at $4 million, was expected to be completed by the fall of 2012 at no cost to residents. Bellwood formerly had a station on the Chicago Great Western Railway main line before it was abandoned in 1968 by the Chicago & Northwestern Railway.
